Keeping Your AC System Cleaner

How To Keep Your Air Conditioning Running Efficiently

by Yolanda White

Many homeowners don't realize that the air conditioning they install in their homes can only handle so much at once. For example, the air conditioning cannot keep the home cool enough if the dryer is running while there are extra people in the home and the sun is seeping through the windows. In order to keep your air conditioning running efficiently for years to come, you must be sure that you make it easier for the system to cool your home by lighten the load. Here's how you can do this:

  • Increase Insulation: Increasing the amount of insulation that your home has doesn't have to be a big, expensive job. Instead of installing insulation in the walls, you can make it easier on yourself financially by adding heavy curtains to the windows. By keeping these curtains closed when you have the air conditioning running, you can reduce the amount of sun getting into the home making it warmer, which then causes the air conditioner to have to work harder. You can also seal up cracks near the windows and doors with caulk in order to reduce the amount of air leakage.
  • Shut Off Appliances: When you have the dishwasher, dryer, and computer running at the same time as the air conditioner, the air conditioner is going to have to work harder to keep your home cool. Wait until the cooler parts of the day to run these appliances when you are able to shut off the air conditioner for a while.
  • Use Exhaust Fans: To remove heat from your home, be sure that you use exhaust fans when they are needed. For example, when you are using the shower or you are cooking on the stovetop. By removing the heat that these things cause, your air conditioner will not have to work as hard.
  • Keep it at Auto: When you run your air conditioner, keep it at auto. This will allow the air conditioner to work only when it has to get your home back to a certain temperature. If you aren't using appliances and you are keeping exhaust fans on when needed and more, you can be sure that your air conditioner will not have to continuously get your home back to a certain temperature. If you don't have your system set to auto, then you are forcing the system to run continuously when it is unnecessary to do so.

By following these tips, you can reduce the amount of maintenance and repairs that your air conditioner will need throughout the year and keep your home at a comfortable temperature. Talk to experts like HVACTECH Systems for more information.
