Flip The Circuit
You are going to want to locate the circuit for the air conditioning unit. This is usually located close to the unit and it should have a metal cover over it that you will flip up in order to expose the switch. Flip the circuit to the off position and make sure that you are lowering the metal cover for protection from the elements.
Give It A Good Washing
Take your garden hose and spray off all of the bird droppings, dead bugs, leaves, twigs, and anything else that might have found its way onto the unit. Once you have made sure that the air conditioning unit is clean, you will want to allow it to air dry.
Cover The Pipes
Locate all exposed pipes that are running to or from the central air conditioning unit. Use foam pipe covers to cover the pipes in order to protect them from freezing during the winter.
Secure A Cover In Place
Once the air conditioning unit is dry, you will need to cover it with a tarp or a cover made specifically for air conditioning units. After placing the cover on the unit, you will want to make sure that you are securing it in place with bungee cords or rope. If you are using a very large tarp, you can set heavy rocks on the edges of the tarp that rest on the ground. The idea is to make sure that the cover is not going to blow off during high winds.
